April Meeting

Susan Whatling Landscape Artist

Susan gave us a great insight into her influences, inspirations and painting techniques in a very interesting presentation about herself and her work. She had an early passion for drawing, and draws and paints daily in her sketchbook on her travels in the countryside and on coastal walks. Sue loves the architectural structure of trees which feature heavily in her current work. Se uses the ideas collected in her sketchbook to produce finished paintings, mainly acrylic on canvas.

Sue illustrated the many stages she goes through in producing a finished painting from the preliminary sketches to the composition in charcoal and to blocking in of areas with paint. She showed the stages of building up colour and detail in paintings and even instances where she felt that she should have stopped but had gone too far. Our members found this particularly interesting and even inspiring and there was much interaction with the audience.
