Portrait from the Matriarchs and Angels series by Nicky Stainton

November Meeting  -  Nicky Stainton

Nicky Stainton   Portraits and Journeys -  Nicky gave an emotional and inspiring talk about the series of work she has done inspired by her family history. It was a moving and deeply emotional story as her great grandparents were forced to flee from the Ukraine to Vienna as Jewish refugees prior to WW1. They built a new and successful life in Vienna only to be caught up in the persecution of Jews by the Nazi's in WW2. Her mother, then a teenager, was fortunate enough to escape to England through a refugee sponsorship scheme and began a new life in Britain.

This story inspired Nicky to develop a body of work under the title 'Grandmothers, Godmothers, Matriarchs and Angels' that challenges the invisibility of older women and presents them centre stage.

Nicky showed examples by other artists documenting the journeys of current refugees across Europe.

Nicky uses a range of techniques and media - acrylics, collage, drawing, print-making - and often combines them together. The work is figurative but she is more interested in the essence of a subject and its emotional and visual connections than in reproducing a strict likeness.
